The DBAG Class 425 is a family of modern electric multiple units (EMUs) built for DB Regio regional services in Germany between 1999 and 2008. These trains were constructed by a consortium of Bombardier, Siemens and DWA and designed for short- and medium-distance passenger traffic with frequent stops thanks to their high acceleration and lightweight aluminium body. The Class 425 consists of four-car articulated sets that share jacobs bogies and provide efficient suburban and regional service, while the related Class 426 version uses a similar design in a two-car formation. Nicknamed the “Quietschie” by railfans, the 425 delivers a maximum speed of around 140 km/h and a power output of about 2,350 kW, making it versatile for a wide variety of DB Regio routes across electrified German networks.
The Class 425’s design was developed from earlier DB EMU families like the Class 423, focusing on high acceleration and frequent-stop service while minimising drag with a flat aluminium superstructure. Its articulated four-car layout not only improves ride stability but also simplifies maintenance, as units can only be separated at heavy-maintenance facilities.
